Salisbury is a cathedral city situated within the county of Wiltshire. Salisbury is the only recognised city within Wiltshire and is second in terms of being the largest settlement within the county, with Chippenham taking top spot in terms of settlement size. Salisbury has last recorded population of figures around 40,000 ranking it among the less densely populated areas of England. It lies in the southeast of Wiltshire County and the Salisbury City Council was only recently set up in 2009, resulting in the city no longer becoming known as its original 1227 name: New Sarum. The city itself lies upon the conflux of the rivers Bourne, Ebble, Nadder and Wyle, of which are tributary to the Hampshire Avon, flowing to the south coast.

Salisbury has an important railway station acting as the regional interchange of the city, a crossing point between the West of England Main Line and the Wessex Main Line. As far as tourism is concerned Salisbury benefits a large deal from its UNESCO World Heritage Site, Stonehenge, situated only 8 miles to the northwest of the city. This is primary factor in the city’s main attractions and brings in a notable amount of the city’s visitors. Historical sites like Stonehenge factor greatly in the city’s economy. Other areas of interest come in the form of the cathedrals.
