Map of St Albans
About St Albans, Hertfordshire
St Albans is a historic cathedral city in Hertfordshire, located around 20 miles north-northwest of Central London, 11 miles south-southeast of Luton and close to Hemel Hempstead and Hatfield. Its position just outside the M25 and within the London commuter belt makes it a popular residential location for commuters and business travellers requiring regular journeys to London, major railway stations and nearby airports including Luton Airport, Heathrow Airport and Stansted Airport.
The city stands on the route of the old Roman road Watling Street and developed from the Roman settlement of Verulamium, one of the most important Roman towns in Britain. Because of its location on historic coaching routes between London and the Midlands, St Albans became an important stopping point for travellers — a role it still fulfils today for modern road and rail transport connections.
The origin of the name
St Albans is named after Saint Alban, recognised as the first British Christian martyr. According to early historical sources, Alban lived in the Roman town of Verulamium during the 3rd or 4th century. He sheltered a Christian priest who was fleeing persecution and later refused to renounce his own Christian faith, leading to his execution. The site became a place of pilgrimage and later the location of St Albans Abbey, now St Albans Cathedral, which remains a major landmark in the city.
Development and growth
For many centuries St Albans was a market town and an important coaching stop on routes to and from London, which explains the large number of historic inns still visible in the city centre today. The arrival of the railway in 1858 strengthened its connection with the capital and helped establish St Albans as a commuter town.
City status was formally granted in 1877 when Queen Victoria issued a royal charter and the Abbey Church became a cathedral. During the 20th century the population expanded significantly as London grew outward and people moved beyond the capital while maintaining easy access via road and rail links.
Today St Albans forms part of the Greater London Built-up Area and remains a highly desirable commuter location due to its quick transport links to London St Pancras International, the M1, A1(M) and M25 motorway network.
Culture and tourism
St Albans has an active cultural and tourism scene, attracting visitors throughout the year. Cultural venues include the Alban Arena, Maltings Arts Theatre, Abbey Theatre and Trestle Arts Base, along with concerts held in St Albans Cathedral and local churches.
The city’s museums include the Verulamium Museum, which explores Roman Britain, and the Museum of St Albans, detailing the city’s local history. Nearby green spaces such as Verulamium Park and the Watercress Wildlife Reserve provide popular outdoor attractions for residents and visitors alike.
Because of its architecture and proximity to London, St Albans is also a regular filming location for television and film productions. Productions filmed in the city have included Inspector Morse, Foyle’s War, Johnny English and First Knight.
