Okehampton in Devon

Situated on the northern edge of Dartmoor in Devon, Okehampton is a lovely old market town with a population of around 7,500.

The town is home to the wonderful, picturesque Okehampton Castle, which dates back to the Domesday Book and sits in an elevated position above beautiful woodland walks where the West Okement River runs. The Castle was first started just after the Norman Conquest, with a moat, as a Motte and Bailey castle.

Today Okehampton is known as one of the walking centres of Devon, with superb access to Dartmoor direct from the town, or via the surrounding villages like Belstone.

This northern quarter of Dartmoor is the wild side of the moor, fantastic for walking, cycling and riding. Several National Trust properties are in easy reach, Finch Foundry, Lydford Gorge and Castle Drogo are all nearby.

Two Castles Trail, Tarka Trail, Granite Way and the West Devon Way to Plymouth are all easily accessible from the town centre. There are guided walks from and around the town, wild swimming in the rivers, a golf course, museum, gym, swimming pool and the extremely beautiful Simmons Park in the centre of town.

History of Okehampton

Okehampton was founded by the Saxons. The earliest written record of the settlement is from 980 AD as Ocmundtune, meaning settlement by the Ockment, a river which runs through the town. It was recorded as a place for slaves to be freed at cross roads.

Like many towns in the West Country, Okehampton grew on the medieval wool trade. Notable buildings in the town include the 15th century chapel of St. James and Okehampton Castle, which was established by the Norman Sheriff of Devon, Baldwin FitzGilbert.

The Army and Ten Tors

There is a substantial army training camp on Dartmoor which can be reached via Okehampton, and is commonly referred to as “Okehampton Camp”. It is managed by the Defence Training Estate, and used by a variety of military units, including the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines (CTCRM), Lympstone, Devon, and many cadet training units. The Ten Tors event is run by the Army each year in early May from Okehampton Camp.
