The History of Anglesey

Anglesey, also known as Ynys Môn in Welsh, is the largest island in Wales and the seventh-largest in the British Isles. Its history is rich and diverse, spanning thousands of years. Here’s an overview of the history of Anglesey:

  1. Prehistoric Era:
    • Anglesey has a significant prehistoric heritage. It is known for its numerous megalithic monuments, including burial chambers and standing stones, which date back to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages.
    • The island’s most famous prehistoric site is Bryn Celli Ddu, a Neolithic burial mound and stone circle.
  2. Roman Period:
    • The Romans established a presence on Anglesey during their conquest of Britain. The island was known to them as Mona.
    • In AD 60 or 61, the island became the site of a significant conflict known as the Anglesey Campaign, led by the Roman governor Gaius Suetonius Paulinus against the Druids and the Celtic tribes that inhabited the island. The Romans ultimately subdued the local population.
  3. Early Medieval Period:
    • In the post-Roman period, Anglesey played a role in the early medieval history of Wales. It was one of the last strongholds of the Britons against the invading Anglo-Saxons.
    • The island was divided into multiple small kingdoms, each ruled by its own local leader.
    • Anglesey was an important center for early Christianity, with several monastic communities and churches being established during this time.
  4. Viking and Norman Invasions:
    • Like many coastal areas in Britain, Anglesey was subjected to Viking raids during the 8th and 9th centuries.
    • In the 11th century, the Normans, under the command of Hugh of Avranches, invaded Anglesey and established a motte-and-bailey castle at Aberffraw.
  5. Medieval Period:
    • During the medieval period, Anglesey was often caught in the conflicts between the Welsh and English. It changed hands several times.
    • Edward I of England constructed several castles on Anglesey, including Beaumaris Castle, as part of his efforts to control Wales in the late 13th century.
  6. Tudor and Stuart Eras:
    • Anglesey saw relative stability during the Tudor and Stuart eras, but it was not without its share of political and religious conflicts.
    • In the 17th century, the island experienced the English Civil War and the subsequent political changes, which affected its governance.
  7. 18th and 19th Centuries:
    • The 18th and 19th centuries brought significant changes to Anglesey, including agricultural improvements and the development of the copper mining industry.
    • Thomas Telford’s Menai Suspension Bridge (1826) and Robert Stephenson’s Britannia Bridge (1850) were constructed to connect Anglesey to the mainland, facilitating trade and travel.
  8. Modern Era:
    • Anglesey continued to evolve in the 20th and 21st centuries. It played a role in both World Wars, with military installations on the island.
    • The completion of the A55 dual carriageway in the 20th century improved transportation to and from the island.

Today, Anglesey is known for its natural beauty, rich history, and strong Welsh cultural identity. It remains a popular destination for tourists and historians interested in exploring its fascinating past.
