Manchester

Manchester is a city situated within the county of Greater Manchester. It is one of the biggest cities within the United Kingdom and has a population of around 514,000 last recorded according to the 2013 census. It is based in the south-central region of the North West of England and is home to Manchester City Council. Manchester’s earliest routes can be traced back to settlements linked with the Roman fort of Mamucium, a suggested origin for the name associated with Manchester-born residents. The 19th century is where Manchester really developed at a significant rate and its rapid urbanisation was thought to have come about as a result of a boom in textile manufacture, a part of the industrial revolution. This development in the 19th century led Manchester to become the first industrialised city in the world. The 19th century also saw the creation of the Manchester Town Hall and Manchester Ship Canal; the canal being the longest in the world at the time of creation and serving as the Port of Manchester.

Manchester’s history is rich and diverse and has become notable for its architecture and culture, and like Liverpool, its contribution to music. It was also the home to the first railway station in the world and where scientists originally split the atom – a landmark in mankind’s history.
